Necris NAS User Guide

Overview

Necris NAS is a network-attached storage solution that allows you to easily share USB drives across your local network. It provides a web interface for managing files and a Samba server for accessing shared drives from various devices.

Getting Started

Important Prerequisites

Network Setup

  • CRITICAL: Connect Necris NAS to your WiFi router using an ethernet cable
  • This ensures stable network connectivity and optimal performance
  • The device is only accessible within your local network for security

Drive Preparation

  • If you have NEVER used your USB drive, you may need to format it using your computer before connecting to Necris NAS
  • Supported file systems: NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, ext2/3/4
  • Necris NAS cannot format drives - this must be done separately

Initial Access

  1. 1. Connect to the web interface:

    • Open your web browser
    • Navigate to your Necris NAS device (typically http://necris.local)
    • Log in with the default credentials:
      • Username: necris-client
      • Password: necris-is-awesome
  2. 2. Change the default password:

    • Click "Change Password" in the top navigation
    • Enter the current password
    • Enter and confirm your new password
    • IMPORTANT: There is no way to recover or reset your password if forgotten
    • Store your password securely - it cannot be retrieved due to security measures
    • Note: Changing the password will disconnect all current file sharing sessions

Connecting USB Drives

  1. Simply plug your USB drive into any available USB port on your Necris NAS
  2. The system will automatically:
    • Detect the drive
    • Mount it
    • Create a network share
    • Make it available through the web interface
  3. If a newly connected drive isn't detected:
    • First try refreshing your browser
    • If still not visible, use the "Refresh Services" button
Best Practice: Minimize frequent connecting/disconnecting of USB devices for optimal system stability

File Transfer Best Practices

Large File Transfers

  • For files larger than 16MB, always use SMB file sharing (Windows File Explorer, Mac Finder, etc.)
  • The web interface is limited to 16MB uploads and is best used for:
    • Viewing drive status
    • Managing small files
    • Monitoring usage

Supported File Types (Web Interface)

  • Maximum file size: 16MB
  • Supported formats: txt, pdf, png, jpg, jpeg, gif, mp4, zip
  • For other file types or larger files, use SMB

Common Issues and Solutions

Can't Connect to Shared Drives

  1. Verify the Necris NAS is powered on and connected to your network
  2. Ensure you're using the correct username and password
  3. Try refreshing your browser first
  4. Use the "Refresh Services" button only if necessary
  5. Check that your device is on the same network as the Necris NAS

Drive Not Showing Up

  1. Refresh your browser
  2. If still not visible, use "Refresh Services"
  3. Verify the drive is properly formatted
  4. Check if the drive appears in the web interface
  5. Try a different USB port
